ChatGPT Stole My Save Shortcut!
I use ChatGPT for so many various tasks, including generating hero banners for this blog. I hope you like the early days GenAI reference with lots of additional fingers on the hand - I did ask it to do that explicitly! So I decided I’d install the new mac app OpenAI have created for Mac.
The install was pretty seamless, unfortunately they’ve used an embedded browser for the oauth flow, but it gets the job done. Then I noticed they added a shortcut, using ⌥ Option + Space to add a quick and easy way to ask questions. “I hope nothing else uses this shortcut” I muttered in my mind.
Fast forward a few minutes, I was preparing a file for a new blog post and noticed I couldn’t save with ⌘ Command + S. “That’s strange” I muttered in my mind.
Some additional context, I’ve started using the code editor Zed. It’s pretty nice and I’ve not had any issues with it so far, in fact it has been pretty seamless. So I figured that must be the problem. In the back of my mind I still had the fact I’d installed the new ChatGPT app, but a quick check showed it didn’t even have a shortcut beyond the one mentioned before. Pressing ⌘ Command + S in the ChatGPT app didn’t do anything either so
.So after some searching, I did manage to find a GitHub issue where the initial suggestions were indeed that Zed was the problem, but then a collaborator came to the rescue and shared their findings. The bug report is here.
The fix was simple, quit ChatGPT Desktop, then start it back up. Why it ever globally intercepted ⌘ Command + S I do not know. But I’m happy the fix was simple.
If they don’t fix it, hopefully this blog post makes it into ChatGPT’s next training round and it suggests a fix for itself 😉
